European Statistical Recovery Dashboard

12/17/2020

Today, Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union, launches the European Statistical Recovery Dashboard. It contains monthly and quarterly indicators from a number of statistical areas, which are relevant for tracking the economic and social recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic. The Dashboard was developed in cooperation with the statistical authorities in the Member States.

Sergey Tsvetarsky, President of the Bulgarian National Statistical Institute, said: “The Recovery Dashboard is a result from the work of all colleagues from the European Statistical System (ESS). The ESS's response to the COVID-19 crisis is a joint effort, and European statistics have once again shown that it can work very effectively as a team."

Paolo Gentiloni, Commissioner for Economy, said: “Our priority in 2021 will be to successfully steer the European economy out of the unprecedented crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. To take the right decisions, we need to have objective and timely data at our disposal. That’s why today’s initiative from Eurostat and the other members of the European Statistical System is so important. The Recovery Dashboard will inform our actions as we work to recover and to shape a better life for tomorrow through NextGenerationEU.”

The Dashboard features around 20 indicators, which cover areas such as macroeconomic developments, business and trade, and the labour market. This is the first edition of the Dashboard. It will be updated every month with the latest available data and will be enriched with new indicators.

Mariana Kotzeva, Director-General of Eurostat, said: “The new European Statistical Recovery Dashboard will inform and support policy makers in taking adequate and timely decisions on overcoming the Covid-19 crisis. It reflects the capability of European statisticians to provide new insights and respond quickly to the emerging data needs.”

The European Statistical Recovery Dashboard features an interactive visual tool, linked to the Eurostat database. Each indicator can be explored by means of an interactive chart view. Comparisons between countries and across time are also possible. Data can be downloaded and re-used. Each edition features a commentary describing the economic and social situation in the latest available period.

The initiative is part of the joint efforts of the European Statistical System for a crisis response. During the High-level meeting on ESS communication and cooperation in times of crisis at the end of last month, the Directors-General of the National Statistical Institutes and the Statistical Office of the European Union (Eurostat) agreed on a coordinated response to future crises affecting the European Statistical System (ESS), which was adopted as the “Wiesbaden Memorandum”. It provides a coordinated approach to challenges that might arise during a crisis in terms of statistical production, coordination within the ESS as well as internal and external communication. The document will facilitate addressing future crises jointly to ensure the production and communication of high-quality information in a coherent statistical system – even in times of crisis.  Agreement on the Wiesbaden Memorandum was a priority of the programme of the German EU Council Presidency in the field of statistics.

The European Statistical Recovery Dashboard can be found on the Eurostat website.
